What is a Differential?
A vehicle’s differential, found near the drive shaft, is crucial in fulfilling three roles – delivering engine power to the wheels, changing the direction of the gearbox and allowing each wheel to spin at different speeds, which is where it gets the name ‘differential’ from.
Our differential specialists work with several types of differentials, including:
- Open/standard carrier
- Limited slip, posi-traction
- Locking (air/electric)
- Spools, mini spools
All vehicles have differentials of some kind. In front wheel drive vehicles, the differential is in the front and called a transaxle. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, the differential is in the back. Four-wheel drive vehicles have differentials in both the front and back.
